"Precisely at a time when painting is being rediscovered on a large scale... it seems more than apposite to present this outstanding position on contemporary painting in the special context of the Venice Biennial." Robert Fleck
Herbert Brandl (born 1959) has established an international reputation in the art world with his solo shows in major galleries and his participation in important group exhibitions, such as documenta IX in Kassel. He has been chosen to represent Austria at the 52nd Venice Biennial.
For over 20 years now, Brandl has been producing paintings of truly international import, which in particular probe the possibilities of color and pigment. In this respect, his work represents one of the few positions on contemporary painting that make a significant contribution to the contemporary discussion on painting in terms of both the figurative and abstract.
This publication documents Herbert Brandl’s contribution to the Austrian Pavilion with insightful essays by this year’s Biennial Commissioner, Robert Fleck, and by Philipp Kaiser, as well as illustrations of all the works exhibited. It also offers an overview of Brandl’s most recent creative phase, namely from 2005 to 2007.
